Once in a Blue Moon…

A blue moon rises over the Downtown Los Angeles skyline.

Tonight was a rather special astronomical occasion: we had a blue moon. A blue moon is when there are two full moons within one calendar month. A few months ago, in May, I took photos of a full moon. Those photos were taken later at night, when the sky was fully dark and the moon was high in the sky. This time, I wanted to do something a little different. I wanted to get moonrise shots.

As you can see, the effect is completely different. There is still light in the sky. The moon is comparatively not as bright. And it’s proportionately larger (although you can’t tell in the previous photo because there’s no reference point. But trust me, it was smaller). Overall, I was pretty pleased with this shot.

It will be the last blue moon until July, 2015, so we’ll have to wait another three years to see one.
